Motherhood,  Welcome

What I Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag as a New Mom

As a first-time mama I had no idea what to pack in my hospital bag, especially during a pandemic. After reading dozens of blogs and asking other experienced mom’s, I made a list of items to bring with us to the hospital. I will be sure to update this list after delivery to let you know what we did not need or wish we had packed. Without further adieu, read below to discover What I Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag as a New Mom.

Before I begin I want to remind you to call the hospital or birthing center and ask what they provide during and after delivery. My list is based on what my hospital said to pack or not pack. Your list may vary based on where you live and choose to deliver.

Disclosure: This post was prepared prior to the arrival of Baby Gentry. Changes and additions will be made later if needed.

What I Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag

Mama Clothing:

1. Sweatshirt and Pants

I wanted to be sure to pack the comfiest outfit possible. Surely won’t be feeling the best and it will be winter in Kansas when baby girl arrives. Might as well be cozy!

2. Nursing Bra

My plan and hope is to be nursing, so I am packing a nursing bra or two. The ones I purchases are very comfortable as well!

3. Slippers

I fully plan on wearing my slippers home. I’m not bothering with tennis shoes.

4. No-Slip Socks

Don’t want to slip and fall in the hospital! Also, my feet are constantly freezing. It’s good to be prepared.

Mama Bathroom:

5. Shower Shoes and Large Towel

If you’ve ever been to camp you know how important it is to bring shower shoes. Also, I am 6 feet tall and standard towels just do not do the job. Bringing my own extra large towel.

6. Toothbrush and Toothpaste

We were told we would be at the hospital at least two midnight’s, so toothpaste is necessary.

7. Deodorant, Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash

Again, necessary. No one likes to stink.

8. Hair Ties and Brush

There is nothing more frustrating then when your hair is in your face and you don’t have a hair tie. I packed several.

Delivery Bag for Baby:

9. Coming Home Outfit

Hoping to put this cute little onesie and hat on baby girl for a sweet coming home photo. We packed a few outfits just in case.

10. Nursing Pillow

The nursing staff at the birthing center recommended I bring a nursing pillow with me. They specifically requested it, but some hospitals may not.

11. Small Toy

I know we will most likely not need this item, but it was the first thing I purchased after I found out we were pregnant. Hoping to get a picture, we shall see!

12. Blanket

Like I mentioned before, it will be winter when baby girl arrives, so I wanted to pack a warm blanket to cover her with when we leave the hospital.

13. Packed Diaper Bag

To save a little room on this blog post I will describe what was in the diaper bag in a separate post, but it is just the standard stuff!

Delivery Bag for Dad:

14. Change of Clothes

I bought my husband a Girl Dad t-shirt to wear home, but he has a couple change of clothes packed just in case.

13. Electronics

Charger cords, packs, and any electronics are in my husband’s bag.

14. Snacks

The sweet nurses swore they would keep Colton fed, but just in case I packed him a Gatorade and peanut M&Ms.

15. Letter from Me

I’m not 100% sure how I will be acting on the day, so I took time to write Colton a letter pre-labor that he can read on the day or afterward.

16. Toiletries

In case he needs to shower to clean up at the hospital, we packed his toiletries and shower shoes.

Delivery Bag Extras:

20. Hospital Gown and Robe

My one splurge was this labor gown and robe for me. It’s nursing friendly, comfortable, and not necessary, but I wanted to look a little cute for pictures. Don’t we all?

21. Makeup

Again, something I might not need or use. I don’t wear much makeup to begin with, but who knows if I will want to clean up and feel more human?

22. Masks

Unfortunately this baby is coming in the middle of a pandemic, so I packed a few extra face masks.

23. Snacks

Yup, snacks for me! You just never know. I get hangry…

24. A bag and pen

A spare reusable bag and a pen are two items that were recommended to me by other moms. The hospital will send us home with plenty of things, so the bag will come in handy. The pen is another just in case item.

Additional or Not Pictured:

25. Baby Book

My hope is to get her little footprint in her baby book. I can’t wait! Also, if we wanted to write down any details before we forget we would have the book with us. Couldn’t leave this out of the delivery bag!

26. Pillows and Blankets

The hospital also recommended we pack as though we will not be leaving for a couple days, so that means bringing pillows and blankets for my husband and/or me.

27. Car Seat

We will obviously need a car seat in which to transfer the baby home. Safety first!

28. Additional Documents

I have various checklists and insurance documents that I packed in case we need them. I don’t want to be caught off guard if we need something for paperwork.

29. Cookies for Nurses

I make royal icing decorated cookies, so my plan is to have cookies made ready for the nurses and doctors. There’s a possibility they won’t get done in time, but I want to try!
