12 Baby Essentials From a New Mom

Our sweet baby girl is almost 5 months old. Can you believe it? In these past five months I’ve certainly discovered what items are necessity. Below are 12 Baby Essentials From a New Mom. Please keep in mind that all babies and mamas are different, so these things might not work for you and that’s okay. I just want to share what worked best for us, because to be honest I had no idea what I was doing when I was shopping for our first baby. So if you are reading this and also feel lost, I got you! Please enjoy these 12 Baby Essentials From a New Mom.

12 Baby Essentials From a New Mom

1. Doggie Bags

You might be thinking, “Wait. Isn’t this blog post about human baby essentials?” Don’t worry. You are in the right place. Doggie bags come in handy in all sorts of situations, from stinky diapers to dirty clothes. They are by far the best thing we purchased for our diaper bag. You will be glad you packed doggie bags – trust me.

2. Diaper changing pad

We love you Bumbo diaper changing pad. It’s easy to clean and light and goes well with the nursery. Ronia also loves her changing table. Not sure why. Maybe she likes to be clean, but our girl loves a diaper change! You might not want to invest in a diaper changing pad, because you can change a diaper anywhere. And, you can. However, I will say we change about 90% of her diapers on the changing pad in the nursery. It’s just more convenient and makes less mess.

3. Onesies/Sleepers

Before we had Ronia someone told me to stock up on sleepers, and it was great advice. I highly recommend zips and not buttons, because zips are easier for night changes. And zippers that go both ways are even better. So you can zip up from the bottom for quick diaper changes or down from the top to change outfits. I also recommend onesies or sleepers with hands that fold over (babies have sharp nails).

4. Bath seat

The only thing Ronia loves more than a diaper change is a bath. Can you tell? This girl loves to be clean. The Angelcare Baby Bath Support has worked very well for us. It’s a little bulky, but I have found we rarely need to take it out of the tub. It keeps her safe and comfy, and just look at that face. Totally worth it.

5. Oxi clean

Blow outs happen. And if your baby is anything like ours, they happen pretty often. Arm yourself with a big bottle of Oxi Clean to save some of those cute baby clothes. But I also want to say you can throw out those cheap sleepers if they get dirty. Some messes aren’t worth the clean.

6. Thermometer

One thing no one told me to purchase before we had Ronia was a plain old thermometer. We only had a forehead scanning version, but evidently those are not always accurate. The hospital gave us a thermometer (pictured above) in order to take a rectal temperature, and I have to tell you I am glad we had it. Ronia got a terrible UTI and kidney infection when she was only a month old and we ended up spending a week at the hospital. I would not have known she had a fever without that thermometer.

7. Bumbo seat

Babies in Bumbo seats is the best. Ronia loves to sit up like a big girl, and now that she is able to hold up her own head we can plop her in the Bumbo anywhere in the house! She is secure and happy and a part of whatever I am doing – from laundry to cooking to reading her a book. Highly recommend the Bumbo. If not only for the cuteness.

8. Swaddles

I apologize for the poor quality photo, but I don’t have any pictures of Ronia in her swaddle when it was light out. The Halo swaddle/sleep sacks are ingenious. So much easier than large blanket swaddles and not so easily wiggled out of. The photo above is a little dark because it was late in the evening, but you can see how serene she looks. The Halo sleep sack definitely helped Ronia feel more comforted and at peace.

9. Magic suit

Our girl is gonna be tall. She outgrew her swaddles at a rapid pace, and I realized one day she might like to try the Magic Sleep Suit. My nieces wore this sleep suit when they were babies, so I knew I wanted to give it a try. Turns out she loves it! I will say they are hard to clean, because they are so fluffy the fabric takes awhile to dry. I only have Ronia in the Magic Sleep Suit at night and not for naps during the day. That way it doesn’t get ruined with blow outs or spit up. Hopefully. These sleep suits also make it nearly impossible for her to roll over, but she can still suck on her hands if she wants to. Such a great purchase.

10. Car seat cover

Invest in a couple car seat covers. They protect baby from the wind and prying eyes, but can also double as a nursing cover and spit rag. Ronia loves looking at the pattern on the cover pictured above, and it’s so beautiful. I highly recommend stocking up on a few, especially if you are planning to nurse.

11. Baby Bjorn

Another item Ronia loves is her Baby Bjorn. This one was a gift from friends, but man did it come in handy. She doesn’t care for her stroller just yet, but put her in the Baby Bjorn and strap her to dad and she is one happy girl. If you have a baby who loves to snuggle then be sure to snag a carrier like this one!

12. Sound machine

The final item on my list of 12 Baby Essentials From a New Mom is a sound machine. I was skeptical at first, but she sleeps so much better with a little white noise. There are lots of different sound machines online, but we got a simple version from MyBaby. It works great so far and didn’t break the bank!
