Hygge Living,  Welcome

How to Live Hygge Like a Hobbit

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live like a Hobbit? Snug in your hobbit-hole under ground, eating six meals a day and disconnected from the chaos of the world around you? The life of a Hobbit is appealing, because it is so peaceful. Think about it, every aspect of a Hobbit’s day is filled with hygge, and yours can be too. Learn How to Live Hygge Like a Hobbit by implementing these six habits today.

1. Create a Cozy Space

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole… it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”

Hobbits understand that homes are meant to be a place of comfort. A hygge home is cozy, inviting, and safe. It’s a place for people to gather and eat a hearty, home cooked meal. Hobbit holes are literally tucked into the hillside and blanketed in green grass. The doors are rounded and pantries filled with food. They are the epitome of hygge living.

How is your home in comparison? Sure, it might not be built into a hill and covered in grass, but every home can be filled with hygge. Does your home feel safe, inviting and cozy? If not, what do you need to do to transform your living space into a place of comfort? Start by getting rid of all the clutter. The more mess the more stress. Hobbit lives are notoriously peaceful, and yours can be too.

2. Open Your Home to Friends and Family

“…floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats – the hobbit was fond of visitors.”

Hosting is a very hygge habit, and hobbits know this well. When you have a cozy home, people desire to spend time there. They are drawn to the peace and kindness radiating from the walls. Hobbits keep multiple pantries stocked with goodies and are always prepared to welcome guests. Quality time with loved ones is part of a hobbit-like life.

Do you welcome others into your home, or do you find yourself making excuses not to host? As I write this post we are going through a season of social distancing. Now more than ever I miss my family. I miss sitting around a long dinner table, passing plates of homemade food and telling stories. That’s hygge. Never take moments like those for granted. Open your home to the ones you love.

3. Kick Off Your Shoes

“they dress in bright colors (chiefly green and yellow); wear no shoes…”

My husband hates it when I go outside without my shoes, but there is just something about putting your bare toes in the earth; wading through the cool water of a creek; sinking into wet sand on the beach. Hobbits understand the beauty of bare feet.

However, kicking off your shoes isn’t always literal. Think about how incredible it feels to kick off your shoes at the end of a long, hard day. That feeling comes from a desire to rest and be comfortable. When was the last time you took a break? Constant motion does not cultivate peace. Hobbits find time every day to enjoy the simple things, and I encourage you to do the same. Sit on your porch and watch the sunset with a cup of tea. Make dinner from scratch. Read a real book in the comfort of your softest lounge chair. Carve time out of your schedule to slow down and “kick off your shoes.”

4. Eat a Hearty Meal…. or Six?

“If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world”

According to Tolkien, Hobbits eat six meals a day. These meals include: Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevenses, Luncheon, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, and Supper. Hobbits are definitely foodies. They appreciate the art of a good meal. Now although I don’t endorse the consumption of six meals a day, there is something very hygge about the appreciation of a good meal.

Hobbits make their meals at home from ingredients they grow in their own gardens. Rather than taking a spin through the local drive-thru or ordering in, you can learn how to live hygge like a hobbit by making your meal from scratch. Plate your food and use real silverware. Hobbits don’t live with microwaves. At least for today, try and do the same.

5. Spend Quality Time in Nature

“But where our hearts truly lie is in peace, and quiet, and good tilled earth. For all hobbits share a love of thing that grow.”

The quote above is, I believe, from the movie and not from the books, but feel free to email and correct me if I am wrong. However, even if these words originate in the screen play it doesn’t make them any less hygge or hobbit-ish. Like I mentioned previously, hobbits love to grow food in their own garden. They take walking holidays and spend much of their time outside in nature.

Hobbits know that nature had a healing ability. Studies show spending time outside can greatly improve your overall health and well being. For example, when I started working at a desk I found myself spending less time outside. I went to work at sunrise and left at sundown. My Vitamin D levels dropped significantly, which led to a number of health problems. It took time, but with sunlight, supplements, and a whole new life style I began to feel like myself again. Take note from hobbits and spend a little time in nature.

6. Choose to Simplify Your Life

And yes, no doubt to others our ways seem quaint. But today of all days, it is brought home to me: it is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life.

Above all, the hygge life a hobbit is a simple one. It’s a peaceful life of good food, laughter, friendship and kindness. Sure, from time to time a Hobbit might go on an epic adventure to save Middle Earth, but they always come home. Why? Because a hobbit understands the value of simplicity. Learn how to live hygge like a hobbit by simplifying your life. Remove any distractions that keep you from being at peace. Start there, and the rest will follow.
