How to Pack Hygge in Your Handbag

Organization fills me with joy, so I love a purse with lots of pockets. Some might say a purse with pockets is part of my love language. What type of bag brings you joy? Does it have a bold pattern, a long strap, or built in wallet? Do you enjoy an oversize purse or a small clutch? No matter what your preference, discover How to Pack Hygge in Your Handbag.

1. Start with a Clean Bag

Remember, a hygge handbag does not cause stress. The first step in packing hygge in your handbag is to clean it out. Get rid of the receipts, gum wrappers, extra socks and miscellaneous change.

2. Lavender Essential Oil Roller

Research shows the scent of lavender may be useful in treating insomnia, depression, anxiety, and general restlessness. It is also believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies even show it can help digestive issues.

A hygge life is a calm life, so the scent of lavender is an ideal item to carry in your handbag. Try a lavender spray or roller like this one. I find the roller to help me when I am in a crowded space and begin feeling anxious.

3. Reusable Straw

A reusable straw is a staple for any handbag for three reasons. First, disposable straws are in the ten most common items of trash found in the ocean. Second, plastic straws contain BPA, which has been linked to brain and behavior problems as well as an increased risk of cancer and heart problems. Third (and far less important but still relevant), using a glass straw in your drink looks posh. I mean, if you wanna look fancy pull your own straw our of your purse. Again, not as important as the other two reasons.

4. Notebook or Journal

Studies show that journaling can help reduce stress, clarify your thoughts, and help improve problem solving skills. Journals can also help you track patterns as well as remember moments or phrases of great importance. Writing regularly might seem impossible, so I suggest you carry a small, durable notebook with you in your purse as a reminder. Books like The Five Minute Journal are perfect opportunities to reflect throughout your day without taking too much time.

6. Book to Read

According to several studies, reading a real book can have a powerful affect on your physical and mental health. Reading can help you relax, develop deeper empathy, and even fight Alzheimer’s disease. In contrast, staring at a cell phone screen can cause headaches, eye strain and make it difficult for you to relax.

Keep a small book in your handbag to read during lunch, while waiting in the doctor’s office or at a coffee shop after work. Reading even a few paragraphs at a time can be beneficial. A devotion like this one is the perfect item to bring hygge to your handbag.

5. Reusable Bags

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to rid my home of any single use plastics. My first step was to stop using plastic shopping bags. However, my calm “hyggeligt” mentality disappears when I realize I left my reusable bags at home. Keeping small bags like these in my purse at all times helps me feel more prepared, and therefore more at peace.

7. Chapstick (& a Nail File)

Though these items might seem an obvious staple, they are essential for any hygge handbag. A hygge life is a cozy one, and there is nothing more uncomfortable than chapped lips… except perhaps a broken nail. If I break a nail I can’t think of anything else until the snag is smoothed. A moisturizing chapstick like this one or a small nail file are essential for any and all purses. In fact, keep some extras in your car. You can never have too many of either.

8. Hand Lotion

Speaking of comfort, there are some people who cannot relax with dry skin. My husband is one of those people. Especially in the winter months when the air is extra dry, lotion is a vital component for any hygge handbag.

9. Reusable Water Bottle & Mug

In my opinion, being kind to the environment is part of a hygge life. We are only given one planet, and we can do our part to take care of it. There is also something comforting about using your own mug. Carrying a collapsible bottle like this one or a cute reusable coffee cup is not only a more sustainable option, but adds a level of comfort to your day.

10. Tea Bags

Tea bags go hand in hand with that mug I mentioned previously. Life is unpredictable. One day you might get stuck working late at work or sitting in a auto repair shop for hours. Pack a few calming tea bags in your purse for those chaotic days. My personal favorite tea is lavender honey. It always makes me feel more at ease on the difficult days.

11. Scrunchies

The longer the day the more uncomfortable I become. Anyone else have that issue? If I start my work day with my hair down, it is usually in a ponytail by lunch. Gotta be comfortable, am I right? Living in the windy state of Kansas can be especially unpredictable. Scrunchies like these are a handbag staple.

12. Zoo or Museum Membership

Last, but not least, one of the most hygge items you can pack in your handbag is a zoo or museum membership. Use these memberships on your lunch hour to re-set your brain and get a little time in nature.
