Unique Bug Books to Read With Your Toddler

This year we decided to plant a garden, and so far we’ve been blessed by caterpillars, butterflies, bees, ladybugs, and even a hummingbird moth! With all of these insects in our backyard, I thought it would be a good idea to teach my toddler all about them. Read below to discover 7 Unique Bug Books to Read With Your Toddler. 1. Mae the Mayfly by Denise Brennan-Nelson

The Montessori play place near our home has such great taste in books. I found this gem on our last trip there. Mayflies only live about a day, so this book joins a little mayfly on our journey throughout that single day. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story itself teaches about bravery and the beauty of the world around us.

2. Hello Honeybees by Hannah Rogge

Hello Honeybees is an interactive book, because the two little bees on the front of the book actually detach and can be used to tell the tale. You and your little one can help the honeybees go from flower to flower, dance to show other bees how to get to the flowers, and store the pollen they collect to make honey. It’s such a cute little book.

3. The Tiny Baker by Hayley Barrett

To be completely honest, I cannot remember where I found this book, but it is one of my new favorites. The tiny baker is a beetle of some kind that runs an adorable bakery. One day all of the ladybug chefs working in the kitchen abandon the baker to swarm with other ladybugs. The chef is devastated until all of her customers step up to clean up the mess and get her bakery in working order. It’s a sweet tale of friendship and the power of doing a good deed.

4. The Honeybee by Kirsten Hall

The Honeybee book comes with a dust jacket, but I removed it so my toddler wouldn’t tear it to pieces. In this story, a honeybee makes his journey around the world to find the right flowers. It’s a short read, but the illustrations are really pretty and it does a good job of educating kids about how honey is made.

5. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

I couldn’t very well make a list of Unique Bug Books to Read With Your Toddler and now include the Very Hungry Caterpillar. If you haven’t read this book, then you are missing out. It’s a great beginner book for kids learning about how caterpillars become butterflies.

6. Hello World: Backyard Bugs by Jill McDonald

The Hello World books are excellent educational tools. The illustrations are so full, you could spend a good deal of time on each page just talking about the different things you see. It’s like an I Spy book in that way. This Hellow World book talks all about different common insects, and is a great book for any toddler.

7. Anthill by Petra Bartikova

The final book on our list is Anthill. I actually found this book at our local plant nursery. What makes this book unique is that by turning each page, you are peeling apart another layer of an anti. You learn more about more about the rolls of different ants and how they build their nests. It’s very educational and fun to read.
