Hygge Home Tips: 5 Reasons You Should Make Your Bed
Sure, it might be easier to roll out of bed at the last minute, rush to get ready and barely make it to work on time. It’s easy, but the truth is when you save an extra minute or two each morning to make the bed the reward will be far greater than the effort required. Below are the 5 Reasons You Should Make Your Bed. It might seem like a simple task, but the smallest moments can make the biggest impact.

1. Start Your Day on a Win
Naval Admiral William McRavan once said “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.” Start your day on a win. Accomplish one thing. Then if you day goes spiraling down the drain you will have at least accomplished one thing. At least you made your bed.
2. Remind Yourself the Little Things Matter
Many correlations have been made between overall success and making your bed. Why? Because the little things matter. Things like: making your bed, paying the bills on time, keeping your house clutter-free, walking the dog or watering the plants. All of these things are small, but they can make a big impact on your life as a whole. The little things matter, so slow down and take five minutes to smooth the covers and prop up your pillows.
3. Less Mess Means Less Stress
In Hygge Home Tips: 7 Reasons to Clear the Clutter From Your Closets I talked about how a clutter-free life can mean less stress. Clutter affects your ability to focus, can cause depression, cost you time and negatively affect your health. How many times have you lost your phone in the covers and had a mild panic attack while you flung pillows around the room looking for it? Exactly. Making the bed relieves any extra opportunities for stress. Also, your anxiety levels tend to raise throughout to the day. Coming home to a messy bed is another signal to your brain that things are a mess. Give yourself a break first thing in the morning and make your bed. Future you will appreciate it.
4. Leads to Better Productivity
Charles Duhigg calls making the bed a “keystone habit” in his best selling book, The Power of Habit. He says “Making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget.” Isn’t it amazing how the small action of making your bed can create such big change? Good habits and decisions begin as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. Start your day off on a win and you will experience higher productivity.
5. Improve Your Sleep
A study completed by the National Sleep Foundation found that participants who reported regularly making their bed were also more likely to say that they got a good night’s sleep. For me, coming home to a freshly made bed that I can snuggle into is one of the best feelings in the world. When I am at peace then I have more peaceful sleep. So, if making your bed could help give you true rest then why not try it? Who doesn’t want a better nights sleep?
