A dear friend once told me motherhood is sanctification – becoming more like Christ daily – and boy were they right. I’ve never prayed more in my life for help, patience, wisdom, energy… Below are five scriptures that I have helped me in my first few months as a new mother. 1. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8

My first of five helpful scriptures for the new mom is Philippians 4:8. In my five months of motherhood I have found my thoughts creeping toward pessimism. Rather than counting my blessings and savoring each sweet moment, I find myself frustrated because I can’t get things done. This verse reminds me to focus my thoughts even on the rough days.

2. “Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” – Matthew 19:14

It’s so important for me to remember that everything I do and say is being absorbed by my sweet girl. The most important thing in the world to me is that my daughter knows how much Jesus loves her. I am exhibiting Christ to her every day, and this verse from Matthew helps remind me to do just that.

3. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me…” -2 Corinthians 12:9-10

New moms deal with a lot. Postpartum recovery, anxiety, hormone changes, new responsibilities and pressures… the weight of it all can overwhelm you. That’s why it’s so very important to remember even on the days you feel weak, God is mighty. He is with you and he is working through you even on your worst day. Lean on Him.

4. “O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” – Psalm 139:1-2

God knows you better than you know yourself. Sure, there are days when I feel completely inadequate as a mother. I wonder how in the world He could have picked me to be Ronia’s mom. If you are a new mama plagued with these sort of thoughts, I hope you will find comfort in Psalm 139. God knows you. He is in control and He chose you to be a mother. And God doesn’t make mistakes.

5. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.” Psalm 127:3-4

Children are a gift from God on the best days and the worst days. Pregnancy, birth and the growth of a child are all so miraculous. Just think about all the intricate parts of the human body that are formed in the womb and then how much your child is growing and changing every day. It’s amazing! Rest in that miracle with this beautiful verse from Psalms.
