The best baking tips for beginners.

1. Spend the extra money on GOOD eggs.

I suggest finding a local farmers market that sells fresh eggs or a friend who raises chickens. The quality of a farm fresh egg is incredibly different than say a Walmart egg. If the white is clinging to the yoke of the egg, its a good quality egg. Of all my baking tips for beginners, this one might be the most important. Buy good quality eggs!

2. Temperature of the Butter MATTERS.

The warmer your butter, the flatter your cookie. Facts. If you have been working the dough quite a bit, it might be a good idea to chill the dough before baking. That is… unless you like a flat cookie and if so go for it!

Bonus Thought: Also, its tempting to microwave your butter if its too solid for a recipe. You want to save time, I know the feeling. However, I promise the recipe will turn out even better if you take the time to allow the butter to soften at room temperature.

3. Take the time to SIFT your flour and/or confectioners sugar.

Once again, it can be tempting when you don’t have a lot of time to throw the flour and sugar into the mixing bowl without sifting. Been there. Truth be told, there is a reason most recipes say sift. Take the time to make it happen!

4. TEST your recipes.

Try, try, and try again. Your friends, family and coworkers will most likely thank you for all the delicious test batches! Don’t settle if a recipe doesn’t turn out quite right. Keep trying until its mouth-wateringly perfect.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask QUESTIONS.

When I first started frosting sugar cookies with royal icing I had NO idea what I was doing. What helped me most was messaging current established cookiers on Instagram and asking for advice. You’d be surprised how helpful other bakers can be!

Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions at baking supply stores. The saleswomen and men tend to be very knowledgeable!

6. Watch Baking TV Shows for INSPIRATION.

It might seem like a waste of time to watch a baking show for anything other than entertainment, but I have learned so much from watching these programs! I once had a fellow baker tell me to use it as instructional time, and I listened…. mostly because The Great British Bake Off is my jam. I love that show.

Take notes, write down recipes to try, jot down decoration ideas…. it’s time well spent.

7. Never give UP!

Like I said before, try try and try again. When a recipe fails or you don’t get any orders or you drop a batch of fresh baked cookies on the floor…. try again. Practice makes perfect. You got this!

Happy Baking.
