Why It’s Important to Spend Time Day Dreaming

The last few months I have been more intentional about giving myself time to day dream. When I’m driving or nursing Ronia or laying in bed at night I let my mind wander, and have definitely been seeing all sorts of benefits. Read below to discover Why It’s Important to Spend Time Day Dreaming.

Why It's Important to Spend Time Day Dreaming

1. Day Dreaming Helps You Focus

You might be thinking, “Chelsea, how does day dreaming possibly help you focus?” Well, as you may recall in my prioritizing your lunch break post, it’s important to give your brain a break. Day dreaming happens in a different part of your brain then reading, problem solving, speaking and reasoning. When you day dream you are giving those other areas of your brain a break from work, which helps you focus better for the rest of the day. Neat, right?

2. Day Dreaming Improves Creativity

Day dreaming also improves your creativity. Studies show that people who spend time day dreaming found greater inspiration by the end of the day. An article by inc.com state that, “Researchers maintain that daydreaming is what allows us to think of new solutions and possibilities, even when we aren’t directly working on tasks or problems…a daydream lets certain ideas and issues “marinate” in our unconscious minds.” So by giving your mind time to wander, you are in fact improving your creativity and problem solving skills.

3. Day Dreaming Improves Your Health

Day dreaming has been shown to reduce stress and help you sleep better. It’s actually considered a form of self-hypnosis. If you have a new event coming up, you can go into your mind and help yourself to prepare for that event. Now that might seem obvious to those who love to day dream, but thinking through an event prior to it’s occurrence is very helpful. Notice I did not say over-thinking, because you can make yourself worry more by day dreaming a little too much.

4. Day Dreaming Gives You a Little Break

The final and perhaps most obvious reason Why It’s Important to Spend Time Day Dreaming is to give yourself a little break. Life is hard. I’m sure we all can agree this last year has been harder than most. Sometimes you just need to give yourself a little rest and relaxation. A little zen moment, if you will. Rather than getting sucked into Instagram or Tik Tok or losing yourself in yet another episode of the Office, I highly recommend you take some time to day dream.
