Motherhood,  Welcome

Official Reveal: How to Create a Hygge Nursery

Throughout the last year I have been slowly making each space in our home more comforting, minimal and all-around hyggeligt. When we started planning the nursery, my goal was to make it the most soothing place in our home. We will be spending a lot of time in that room over the next several months and I wanted it to feel complete. Like home. I think we achieved that goal. So without further adieu, read below for the Official Reveal: How to Create a Hygge Nursery.

1. Soft Lighting

Soft lighting in the nursery was one of my top priorities. I know that might sound strange, but after being in several nurseries throughout the years I knew how important it is to have a calming atmosphere in the room. Not just for baby, but for me as well. I lucked out and found this great lamp at Target. They were also selling these cool vintage-themed light bulbs that give a “warm candle” vibe. Perfect for a hygge nursery!

We got our changing table/dresser at Ikea. The doorknobs were an Amazon find, because the originals were black. The mirror is Kirklands, but I spray painted it gold rather than leaving it brass.

2. Organization

A hygge home is free of clutter and prepared. Notice I didn’t say perfect. The nursery is clean right now, but it will not always be. What I mean is prepare for baby by organizing. Do your future self a favor by washing the baby’s clothes and putting them away. Go full nesting mode! I give you permission. The more you prepare your home for baby, the more at ease you will feel. And again, future you will be thankful you did that preparation, because that girl will be much more tired.

The drawer organizers are also from Ikea and I love them so much I bought some for my own dresser. The closet door organizer is from the Container Store. Oh, and if you are looking for baby clothing hangers I had to use some from Amazon as well as a second set from Wayfair. The ones from Amazon were too small for some of her clothes.

3. Cozy Accents

Another way to add some hygge to your nursery is to have a few cozy accents. Hygge living is all about coziness after all. For example, you could add a couple throw pillows or a knit blanket, a soft rug or a few stuffed animals. Whatever you choose, remember they will likely get dirty. I’ve had to come to peace with that fact. Oh well, the point of a hygge home is to be lived in.

The throw pillows are a lucky find from TJ Maxx. As for all the other cozy accents, they were either gifts or we already had them at home. Everything but the rug, which is from Rug USA.

4. Display Books

There’s nothing more hygge than a good book. I already had a collection of children’s books, but we decided to display our favorite board books to read to her when she is finally home. I can just picture us in the rocking chair reading before bed every night. We just can’t wait until that dream is a reality.

The book shelves are from Amazon and I found the rocking chair on Buy Buy Baby. However, when researching the chair I found the exact same one through Walmart for nearly $200 cheaper! Remember to look on multiple sites before settling, in order to get a better deal. Hygge living doesn’t have to be pricey.

5. Add a Personal Touch

Bring hygge to your own nursery by adding one personal touch. We ended up choosing this incredible wood sign from @rootedngroundedhome on Etsy. The theme of the shop is “Words that remind. Words that inspire,” which was exactly what we were looking for. I don’t believe this is a precise quote from Winnie the Pooh, but I love it all the same. We always want our baby girl to know how loved she is by us and by her Heavenly Father. I pray this sign will be a reminder to her for many years.
