How to Cultivate a Stress-Free Move

As much as I tried to prepare for our recent move, I could have done more. There were so many things that would have made the moving and unpacking process much more simple. Save your own sanity and read below How to Cultivate a Stress-Free Move. Learn from my mistakes.

How to Cultivate a Stress-Free Move

1. Take Your Time Packing

When moving week arrived we still had several boxes to pack, but I was so tired of packing. I sort of gave up on those last ten or so boxes, and I very much regret it. For example, we lost the bolts to assemble our bed frame and I didn’t find them for three weeks. That would not have happened had I been more intentional about packing. Take your time packing and you will thank yourself later.

Oh, and clearly label every box. I gave up labeling halfway through, and again, I regret it.

2. Hire Professional Movers

Our move was tricky, because our home was a new build and moving day was sort of a moving target. However, if you know the date of your move then please schedule professional movers. I’m very grateful for the friends and family who came to our aid when we needed to move out on a Sunday and in on a Monday, but I would have been much less overwhelmed had professionals just handled things.

3. Have a Separate Box of Essentials

I tried to create a separate box of essentials we would need come moving day, but didn’t give it enough thought. I recommend making a list of items you will definitely need the first day you move in. Things like blinds for the windows, toilet paper, dish soap, snacks, etc. Curate the ultimate box of essentials, mark it well and keep it close to you. That might be my most important tip on How to Cultivate a Stress-Free Move.

4. Accept Inevitable Problems

Problems will arise. You are going to lose things. Someone is probably going to drop something or scratch a wall. On the morning of moving day, I encourage you to take a few minutes to release all your worries and accept the inevitable problems. Having a bad attitude will only make moving day worse. Breathe. You are moving, and that’s exciting! Focus on the good parts.
